01. Ayurvedic Cosmetics for Anti-Ageing

Classical and Classical-Inspired Preparations for Mature Skin Care

Ageing of the skin is a natural process, but premature ageing may occur due to excessive sun exposure, stress, poor sleep, dehydration, irregular diet, pollution, excessive cosmetic procedures, and depletion of tissue nourishment. In Ayurveda, ageing is associated with gradual Vāta aggravation, reduction of Rasa Dhātu, weakening of Ojas, dryness of the skin, reduced firmness, dull complexion and appearance of wrinkles.

Ayurvedic anti-ageing cosmetics mainly work through the following principles:

  1. Vāta Śamana – reducing dryness, roughness and fine lines.
  2. Rasāyana Karma – rejuvenating and supporting tissue vitality.
  3. Varṇya Karma – improving complexion, glow and even tone.
  4. Snigdhatā and Mṛdutā – restoring softness, lubrication and suppleness.
  5. Rakta-Pitta Śamana – reducing redness, sun-ageing and inflammation.
  6. Tvak Poshana – nourishing the skin barrier externally.

The following seven formulations are classical or classical-inspired preparations for fine lines, dullness, loss of firmness, dryness, pigmentation tendency and mature skin care. These are designed for small-batch preparation in a clinic, spa back-bar or artisan cosmetic setting.

Active eczema or dermatitisAvoid exfoliating masks, essential oils and fragranced products
PregnancyAvoid high essential oil exposure; use simple fragrance-free versions
Very sensitive skinPatch-test all products for 24 hours

Student Learning Points

  1. Ayurvedic anti-ageing care is mainly based on Vāta pacification, Rasāyana support, Varṇya herbs and barrier nourishment.
  2. Mature dry skin generally benefits from oils, ghṛita, balms and butters, while Pitta-sensitive ageing skin needs cooling gels and gentle formulations.
  3. Kumkumādi Taila is a classical complexion-enhancing oil, but it is not suitable for every acne-prone skin type.
  4. Weekly lepa helps improve surface dullness, but over-drying masks can worsen ageing signs.
  5. Eye-area formulations must be mild, low-irritation and applied away from the lash line.
  6. Anti-ageing cosmetics work best when supported by sleep, hydration, sunscreen use, Abhyanga and stress control.
